What does Geometry have to do with architecture or where do we see them? From my last post about architecture thinking, during the olden days, the Romans implied geometry or natural forms then applied mathematical principles to standardize and replicate the forms. To date, we use geometry and mathematical principles to analyse or build a structure.
Marcus Vitruvius an author and architect was known for his multi-volume work called De architecture which was about how a building is to be built or in words proportions in construction, to be clear, in today's built environment he was the one who introduced geometry. However, by the next century, his work became famous and was further translated and applied by other architects which then leads to a great piece known as "Vitruvian Man" by Leonardo da Vinci which was believed to be the divine connection between the human form and the universe.
How is this even related to the geometry you ask? well according to Vitruvius, man fits perfectly inside the divine symbol - the circle and the earthy symbol that's the square. It is a geometric interpretation of the ancient belief that man is a "microcosm": a miniature embodiment of the whole universe.
However, "Sacred geometry," or "spiritual geometry," is the belief that numbers and patterns such as the divine ratio have sacred significance. Sacred geometry is found throughout the natural world, you just need the eye to see it. This is a subject that appears in the left and right brain thinking at the same time, as it satisfies the logical sequential and the subjective data. The architectural design is influenced by the geometry around us for instance- The body, when you take the cells into consideration under the microscope we can see the double helix shape of your DNA to the cornea of your eye, every part of your body follows the same predictable patterns.
From the pyramids in Egypt to the new World Trade Center pinnacle in New York City, the extraordinary design utilizes similar fundamental structure blocks as your body and every living thing. Moreover, the standards of calculation are not bound to incredible sanctuaries and landmarks. Calculation shapes all structures, regardless of how modest. Devotees say that when we perceive mathematical standards and expand upon them, we make abodes that solace and move. Maybe this is the thought behind the modeller's cognizant utilization of heavenly extent like Le Corbusier accomplished for the United Nations building.
