The architecture was found before the term was even introduced, the exact origin was in the Neolithic period, around 10 000 BC, or simply when people stopped living in caves and started handling the way they want their houses to look and feel. Buildings or structures were made by mud-brick during those times and a great example to those are the great city of Uruk in Iraq and Ait-Ben Haddou in Morocco which is currently inhabited by families. It is intriguing how even in those dark times such remarkable structures were built and still stand strong even now, many of those structures and sculptures influence the modern buildings, monuments and temples such an example could be taken from Ancient Eqyptian Architecture. The architecture of ancient Egypt tells this story of the people's relationship with their land and their gods. It also shows the power of the ruler and narrates a story, Ancient architecture always had a story behind it, it would either be written, painted or carved on the facade.
In those days, the rulers built their kingdom or even the place of worship to great hierarchy to show their power and how wealthy their kingdom is. But even now people spend tons of money on labour and material to build in greater heights.
Why do we aspire to such grand heights? Ego perhaps. or maybe for other reasons.
However when we move on to the classical architecture which was initially adopted by Egypt but first seen in Greece and then Rome. Greek architecture is more than impressive, it is timeless, we don't have to dig up to see greek architecture as it is around us even now. Where? You can see it in the museum, theatres, city hall or the famous Lincon memorial and what do we see? Greek Columns- they have however classified five orders- Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, Tuscan, and Composite, the columns also know as orders gave a feeling of order strength and balance to the structure. The greek came up with the first three order which is Doric, Ionic and Coronation and the Roman added the other two.
In addition, the Greek concern with simplicity, proportion, perspective, and harmony in their buildings would go on to greatly influence architects in the Roman world and provide the foundation for the classical architectural orders which would dominate the western world from the Renaissance to the present day. The ancient Romans improved many of the greek architecture and components, it is classified by the arch, vault, dome and use of concrete. Arches are widely used in the modern world as well, a great example of a Roman arch can be found in The Colosseum, which is an oval amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome, Italy.
The Romans were great innovators, they came up with new designs, materials and unique construction techniques which were combined with existing techniques developed from greek. They produce a whole range of new architectural structures such as the basilica, triumphal arch, monumental aqueduct, amphitheatre, granary building, and residential housing block.
One of the lasting contributions ancient cultures have made to modern life is architecture, both in terms of surviving monuments and their influence on contemporary buildings around the world. Different styles in architecture mark different periods, each period has its unique style/design and different approach which we get to learn from. Changing trends in technology led to different ideas and innovation in modern architecture.
Roman civilization had achieved, within the bounds of its technology, relatively as great a mastery of time and space as we have achieved today - Arthur Erickson
